SECU member for over 7 years and never worked for the state . You just need someone in your family that has and you can get and account. SECU has been great servicing car loans and mortgage. Also sold a few cars and they've been nothing but helpful!

Some Wells Fargo branches have Saturday hours (9:00 - 1:00).

Most banks have Saturday hours at a few of their locations around the triangle. The Woodforest banks in the Walmart stores are even open on Sundays. Some of the CCB locations in the grocery stores were open on Sunday too, but not sure now since Suntrust has taken over.

I went with PNC so far so good. Truly the only Free checking option for me. The branch is near my home and they have Saturday hours, mobile deposits, write a check via web. They also threw in some checks.

I could not get over spending 24 a year at SECU for two checking accounts. I liked coastal but they wanted 18 membership fee and money for checks. Thank you for all the help.

I got 93 dollars last month in dividend on the Go Green Checking. 18 bux to become a member and having to pay for checks is a great deal when you put it that way. Even when I don't do the 30 debit transactions I get 15 and 40 dollars.

You need to compare other things to look at the overall cost. From what I can see, PNC checking pays 0.03% vs 0.25% at SECU. PNC Money Market starts at 0.05% and goes to 0.25% vs 0.75% flat at SECU.

I did compare. Like I said all I need is basic checking. I dont do savings at the bank. If I only keep a minimum amount in my checking account, lets say 25 dollars....does interest really matter? It would take me years to get my investment back.

Fair enough. I was just pointing out that the higher rates that SECU pays can more than offset the modest $1/month fee for checking. In terms of savings, SECU is a great place for that. Their money market pays higher rates than available at some of the on-line banks like INGDirect or the investment houses.

I switched to PNC as well after Wells Fargo announced the new fees. I also have a savings account at the SECU and use that as my main bank but needed a second checking account. I have been very happy with PNC and last month they did a $15 promotion to try the online billpay. The staff that I've dealt with were friendly and helpful. I've been happy with the switch.
