My husband just called and said the police have 40 East completely blocked off near RTP. I can't find anything on WRAL about it though. Anyone have the scoop?
well, I just drove back and forth From Cary to Chapel Hill between 12:30 and 1 PM and again between 3 and 3:30 and nothing was closed off. Must have been a quick trip to wherever she was going!
All presidential trips are quick. Have you ever seen that motorcade move? They don't only break speed laws, they sometimes break the laws of physics!
I happened to be on lunch break when Obama was in town awhile back. I was on Lumley road about to turn right onto 540 when the cops blocked that stoplight. I waited for about 15 mins and then the motorcade came from the airport onto 540, about 30 vehicles or so. About 1 minute after they passed the cops let us go.. I was the 2nd person onto 540 behind the motorcade. Once I got onto the on-ramp they were already out of sight. It was pretty cool because I had 540 all to myself. Every bridge I went under had police up on top blocking the road. I got to where 540 meets 40 and the motorcade was already wayyy up 40 headed to Chapel Hill...I could still see them but they were haulin azz! 40 westbound was completely stopped as far to the horizon as I could see. Luckily I was going east. But yeah, they had to have been doing 85 or 90mph.

I agree, when I lived in Marietta, Georgia (right next to Dobbins Air Force base), the motorcade would literally go flying down I-75 to/from Atlanta at a speed of (at least) 90 mph. It looked like a small army of black cars, police cars and police motorcycles floating on air. I always wondered "How can a Suburban handle that well at 90 mph"?

And don't forget, that's not your granny's SUV. I suspect it has a tad more weight being pulled by just a few more horses, and driven by someone with a lill' bit of training and maintained better than the average heap.
I lived and worked in DC for several years and it was pretty cool to see the in-town motorcade fly by. 2-3 limos, a few SUVs, and a horde of police cars and motorcycles all doing an in-line ballet. I enjoyed watching them except that I learned to plug my ears to protect myself from alllllll those sirens.
