The first elementary school I went to was built in the 30s and had all original chalkboards. They were just a large piece of slate framed by four basic strips of wood. Is that what he's looking for or something more decorative?

I think this is what he was looking for but now he says he's run out of wall space so he's planning to do a plain whiteboard on an easel.

There's always chalkboard paint in case anyone anyone wants to make their own. It comes in black and green. I did an entire wall in my daughter's room years ago complete with chalk tray. It held up amazingly well over the years. It still looks great.
