I wouldn't call PieBird fantastic yet - only been once - but claiming it was frozen/shipped in is silly.
However, I'm not sure how to meet the description of trendy, suitable for kids, and inexpensive. Have you eaten at McCall's yet? It's an authentic Southern cooking/barbecue place in clayton.
I guess by trendy, I just mean not an old hole in the wall or a typical chain. My husband is really into independently owned places that actually cook their food in site-not having it shipped in from a warehouse/commissary. We cant seem to escape the usual chain places that are everywhere. As for inexpensive and suitable for kids, I am not looking for white linen, fine dining-we dont have the time or money for that right now. (Havent had a "date night" in probably 6-8 years, but that's another story!)

Captain Stanleys is very good for sea food. SE Raleigh. Just take US 70 from Clayton. Easy drive. Festejos for mexican. E. Main Street in Clayton. Guacamole made at table is very good. Rockin Comet Diner. Good vegetables and breakfast. Jones Lunch in downtown Clayton for hot dogs. A Clayton tradition since 1958.
I am not impressed with most of the food in Raleigh, period. We went to Piebird last weekend because people were raving about it. The pies were all frozen and grocery store stuff. If someone has recommendations on where to go that uses fresh, local food, not tractor trailer delivered stuff, I'm open. We liked Irregardless, but it's way overpriced for what it is. Second Empire was tasty but who has $60 for lunch?
While I agree that Piebird is not very good, their pies are definitely not frozen. Not sure what gave you that impression. When I'm craving a piece of pie, I either go to Beasley's or Scratch in Durham.
My "impression" of PieBird comes from someone I know who used to work there. So, you know, less of an impression and more of an account. She said that they didn't start out that way, but they're definitely serving frozen stuff now. I asked her when my Chicken Curry pie came out cold and icy in the middle. "Hey, I thought PieBird made everything to order?"
My wife and I went downtown last weekend to eat dinner at Spize (Thai/Asian) only to discover that it was closed for dinner now. It was a nice casual place and we were going to introduce our kids to this cuisine, as we had only been there by ourselves before. I'd recommend it for a weekend lunch.
Well, we ended up walking down the street and going to Busy Bee (Tavern) instead. This was on a Saturday at about 6pm and they were perfectly happy with us bringing in the kids. My 7 year old ordered the mac and cheese on the child's menu and got quite a surprise. Not box Kraft mac and cheese like most places. He devoured it and we had to roll him out of there he was so full. Their food looks to be fresh and made on site, but you never know. I'm not a foodie by any stretch of the imagination.
Spize is good but I feel like it's overpriced for what it is. Hit up one of the Vietnamese restaurants on Capital Blvd and you'll get food that's just as good for half the price

Yeah, but the OP was looking for something more between Clayton and downtown Raleigh.
