They caused the accident...as a licensed driver you need to be able to judge how fast a car is going and determine "is it safe to pull out now?" You must be unfamiliar with that intersection. The two right most lanes are the crest of a hill, making it difficult to see traffic if you're trying to make the left hand turn from the side road. If the traffic traveling on Cary Parkway is going about the speed limit, it gives you enough time to stop for said traffic once you get to the middle of the road in the event that they were hidden from view once you started making the turn. If they're going 10 over the speed limit, there's a good chance you're going to get sideswiped. Personally I think there needs to be a light at that intersection for the number of times I've seen accidents there.
