My wife and I relocated to this area and are having a house built. I'm just curious what people are paying on average for gas/electric along with some other details. I was talking with a guy that lives in Michigan and he was shocked that we chose to go with a natural gas fireplace, range, and furnace in our new house. He stated that the natural gas prices in NC are outrageous compared to the national average. I couldn't find any info to support his claims....can someone confirm or debunk his claim?

I don't have gas service at my house, and it wouldn't be a very valid comparator for new construction anyway since it was built in 1920, but you can compare average natural gas prices by state at this US Energy Information Administration site:
The prices will likely vary depending on your energy providers.

Energy Star?:
Type of Heat (heat pump, gas, etc): gas heat/electric AC
Estimate of your
Electric Bill (Summer): this year was about $115 a month
Electric Bill (Winter): this is normally about $40
Gas Bill (Summer): $10 monthly service fee
Gas Bill (Winter): this past winter was mild so my bills were around $85 but the year before they were in the $200s
When I had a 1200 sq ft place with a heat pump my highest bill was $85 and was in the $40 range during the summers.
We moved here from NY and we were on a monthly budget for the gas....I'd say we averaged around $250-$300 a month for gas.
We have gas for everything in our house here (except fireplace) and my gas bill has yet to reach $100 a month, even in the middle of winter. This last winter was mild but the one before was a normal winter for here. When it's not winter (about 9-10 months of the year here) my bill is about $25.
I think your friend in MIchigan is forgetting about the extreme difference between winter temps in each state.
Our electric bill is also less - my lowest here has been about $125 and the highest was last month - $265. The next highest bill has been $216, which happened twice. Other than that we have not had a bill over $200.
In PA we were able to pick our electric provider, is this the case in NC for both electric and gas?
Thanks!
Nope. In any particular location, you'll have only one choice for electricity (by state law). It works the same way for gas as far as I know, but I'll let someone else confirm that. For example, here in Durham, I could only use PSNC for gas service if I needed it.
Age of House: 4 years old

Energy Star?: yes
Type of Heat (heat pump, gas, etc): heat pump 2nd fl, gas heat/electric AC 1st fl
Estimate of your
Electric Bill (Summer): this year was about $175 a month
Electric Bill (Winter): this is normally about $30
Gas Bill (Summer): $?? It's pretty darn low
Gas Bill (Winter): $85
My utilities are much cheaper here than other places I've lived.
Water/sewage is nearly 2x of what I use to pay (~$80/month vs every 2 months)

This is pretty much inline with the house we are building, do you mind if I ask who built yours?
The water/sewage seems pretty close to what we were paying up in PA. ~$35/mo water and ~$32/mo sewer. This was just my wife and I though, you may have additional people living in your house driving those numbers up a bit. Thanks for the info!
