So I've lived about 4 miles east of these neighborhoods for the past 6 years. How worried should I be about my family (myself, the wife, and two little girls)?
We just got an all-house filter about 6 months ago. Prior to that we were using filters on the sink and in the water pitcher. (Plus we have a water softener, of course.)
I guess what I want to know is how the aquifer is in the Wake Forest area. A neighbor once told me that there was an underground river that our wells were tapping into. Is there any truth to that?

Well water in the piedmont is drawn from uncontained aquifers, which is basically just ancient rainwater that has infiltrated deep into the bedrock.
Well contamination will be from a specific dump site and is usually very localized. Ground water does move, but very slowly. The likelihood of your well having the same contaminant is nil at a distance of four miles.
I drink water out of my fridge dispenser all the time. Sometimes the carbon filter does not get changed as often as it should, so I guess I would say I do.
