Are these actual subdivisions or areas that have acquired these names over the years?
Nope, not subdivisions. :-) Well... they were "developed" by investors -- e.g., Brodie Duke developed Trinity Park as a streetcar suburb, though it got its modern name in the 1970s when neighborhood activists started remodelling and saving hold homes. OND and OWD were originally North Durham and West Durham (the latter a separate town) until Durham grew north of Club Blvd. (it now stretches miles and miles past that marker) and west of Erwin Mills.

Watts-Hillandale, similarly, was housing that catered to the doctors who worked in Watts Hospital (now the NC School of Sci. and Math -- Watts Hospital became Durham Regional). Since the Hillandale Country Club is right next door, the name Watts-Hillandale stuck.

Subdivisions? We don't need yer steenkin' subdivisions here. :-) Give me a good old fashion street grid any day of the week!

Incidentally, a friend and fellow blogger was out this Sunday visiting Duke Park, the hugely popular public park in the popular Durham neighborhood of the same name. Over the course of about 90 minutes, he counted 250 kids, adults and parents in the park. No restrictions to 'residents only,' no gates to keep kids in or out... just parents from all over Durham out to enjoy a good afternoon with their kids playing with other kids.

Thanks for the history lesson, BCR. You're right; Duke Park is awesome. And it's surrounded by beautiful old houses.

Does anyone know if the property tax rate in Treyburn is an issue for buyers? Any idea what the rate is?

Thank you for all the responses to this thread. The info is very helpful.

I had assumed that Treyburn was in the county only but looks like it *is* city and county. I'd check with the developer.

Wildwood Green in NW Raleigh- a well kept, mature (10-15 yrs old) golf course community with a mix of ages, community pool and tennis and a nice , affordable golf course that welcomes family play. Location is central between RTP and downtown Raleigh and only 10 miles from Weston Park in Cary. 15-20 minutes commute to most major employment areas.

Inside the beltline near Glenwood/Anderson- nice homes, in demand location, but traffic tends to be high so if you have kids it may be less appealing, although many families like it for the prestige.

Olde Creedmoor- large lots, nice community, lots of families, just very welcoming.

Well, one reason may be that Treyburn never really took off as much as people expected b/c of the N. Durham connector never being built.

Also, I'm surprsied noone has mentioned Hope Valley in Durham. I've always loved that neighborhood, just can't afford it.

Me too! Subdivisions are my kryptonite. I'm going to be looking in all of the neighborhoods listed

Good point. The Northern Durham Parkway *is* supposed to happen. But only eventually. *After* the East End Connector (ca. 2012), and after US 70 is upgraded to a full freeway all the way to the Wake County line. And then only in stages!

Believe it or not, the Brightleaf subdivision in eastern Durham County has a stub road out that's signed Northern Durham Pkwy. You're probably talking 20 years before it goes all the way past the Eno, though.

How could I have forgotten Hope Valley? It is a really beautiful area, and a gorgeous old golf course to boot.
