How much snow do you get how many times a year? I know last year was mild everywhere on the East...but normally would you get 3 or 4 times a year that kids could go sledding in their back yards? Say 3-4 inches a few times a year or would that be a lot?
How far are the drives to the places for snow activities....say artificial snow (skiing, tubing etc) and real snow in the mountains...hiking....etc
Are parts of the Virginia mountains for actual snowfall closer (2 hours or so)...than the NC mountains?
The Raleigh area doesn't even average one snow of 3-4" per year. A couple of "dustings" isn't unusual. West Virginia is probably the most popular destination for skiing, snowboarding, etc. It about a 4 hour drive.
Raleigh snow? Gotta roll over laughing. Most of my neighbors don't even have shovels and the ones who do are transplants and brought them with em. Now ice storms is another matter. What little snow we get can be a problem on roads because we don't have the equipment to deal with it. Doesn't mean it is enough to sled in.

For day trips, the most popular are Wintergreen (in Virginia), Sugar (NC) and Ski Beech (NC). I usually only ski Beech if I get to Sugar and it looks excessively crowded. All these resorts are around 3.5 to 4 hours away from the Triangle, depending on where you live. Alpine also offers bus day trips to Wintergreen, which can let you catch a little sleep on the bus during the drive and get in a full day of skiing.
If you are going to stay overnight, there is also Snowshoe in WV. The resort costs about the same as any Western resort in regards to lodging and lift tickets, so I tend to skip it and take a trip out West instead.
Strangely when i was in much I elementary and middle school in the 90's we had very little snow, was some kind of weird pattern. But thankfully we seem to be back to normal.
