Hi, I am another relocator from LI/NY. We are interested in a house in Neuse Colony. i have read great things about the schools in clayton and looked at the NC school report cards. my children would be attending East Clayton Elementary, Riverwood middle and clayton high. I have heard some bad reports on the elementary in terms of safety and the attitudes of the teachers and prinicpal. does anyone with children in these schools have anything to add ? I understand issues with overcrowding and do not expect the perfect school. Also, is there any talk about this district going to year round since so many new people are moving in ? i have read so many thread re:Clayton,but don't recall specific schools mentioned. Sorry if this has already been discussed.

Bottom line all the schools down here are over filled with students. Teachers are good or bad depending on the year. If YOU as a parent are doing your job like making learning fun your child will be just fine in the systems down here.

Its a good place to raise kids.

thanks,for your reply. I agree that we sometimes place too much weight on the school reports. The parents involvement has so much to do with the child's success in school. I just want to know from some parents if there may be some problems in that particular school. Thanks again.

Default just move to clayton

We where first looking into the west johnson high area , but after talking to several parents and students we decided on clayton high . the reason is the pricipal there is running the school like a nazi and dozens and dozens of complaints . If it was just a few people complaining i would not pay that much attention , but when everyone you talk to says the same thing it is hard to iqnore....... So clayton is our pick Johnson High does have a excellent band program.........On the other hand the school is very new and of course they built it with not enough classrooms there are alot of trailors there. Only a few in clayton high.

I have kids in Elementary so can't speak at all for the upper schools. Though my kids are not in E. Clayton I know several with kids there and they don't have anything but positive things to say (we're at River Dell).

I'm sure you'll see some more responses as the day goes on. You can also check out;

I don't put a huge amount of weight into the test scores but decent ones help. I look more at the parent reviews if you can find them.

Good luck!
Lauren

I have a daughter that goes to East Clayton. We love it there. It is a brand new principal so not sure which principal the comments were referring to but any first year of new principal is bound to get complaints because people don't like change. As for safety, those comments may be referring to the fact that there are tons of trailers at the school and safety/security issues are continually being fine tuned. My daughter was in a "cottage" last year and I was in her classroom twice a week. I was satisfied with the level of safety I observed. This year she is in the building and again, I have not had any issues with safety/security. Next year, the new school will be open and the overcrowding at East Clayton should be alleviated. It is the most overcrowded at the moment in Johnston County. The teachers she has had have been great- no complaints at all. I also had one at Riverwood last year and was pretty satisfied with the school although he was only there a year. He is now at Clayton High and so far, I am happy with that school. I also know kids that go to West and they love it there so I guess it depends on who you talk to.

I have a junior at West Johnston. We moved here this summer and chose our home with the West as our defining "must have". We could not be happier with West. Parental involvement in fantastic, administration has been fine, we get a call at the beginning of every month telling us what is going on that month etc.

My son goes to Riverdell and they are wonderful to him, especially with tutoring and stuff. My hairdresser's daughters goes to East Clayton and they also love it. They failed in previous school, but after they enrolled in East Clayton, they are gifted students in a gift program. I strongly feel that your kids will succeed in East Clayton. Go for it!
