Love these pizza threads that pop up about every 3 months!
There is a place on Six Forks Road, near Newton Road...used to be called Furgettaboutit. Folks from NY own it. I think they changed to Cosmo Brothers or something like that. Anyway...my mom is from da'bronx and she swears it tastes just like NY pizza to her. I'll agree.
There is also a place off Hwy. 70 near the Garner/Clayton line called...New York Pizza! Tastes good, as well. Also run by New Yorkers.
My mom also says the reason NY pizza is better is due to the water. She says the same thing about the bagels!
And...my mom still has pickles shipped to her from NY!!!
Would it be possible for us to acknowledge that tastes differ - among people and even regionally - so that when something is not to our personal liking we don't have to label it as somehow inferior? Is it not enough to ask where to find pizza that tastes like what you're familiar with in New York, rather than labeling pizza that is not to your liking as not "real" or not even "average"?
Thank you! Implying that something that isn't NYC style is not "real" pizza is patronizing, even for New Yorkers. If you want "NY Pizza", call it that, not "real" pizza, because not everyone agrees with your definition!

"Where in the triangle can you get a slice of pizza that most resembles what you are used to getting in NY?" (that is really your question without the associated condescension).
I think if one of the the pizza places that is considered some of the best in NY would open a shop here they would make a killing.. Ship the water down here if necessary.
I do think the water thing is funny since most of NYC's water gets pumped in from NJ aquifers. Maybe it's all the extra groundwater pollution that makes it taste so good.
