Good Mexican food in or around Raleigh area?
Don't take this the wrong way, but does anyone who really knows good Mexican food know of any good places anywhere in Raleigh or the surrounding areas? I am not trying to sound harsh, it's just that I have met a ton of people who claim to know good Mexican food, but have never lived or eaten it in an area that has true Mexican food like Texas, California, or many of the other border midwest states, or Mexico for that matter. I have eaten at places that most people would consider to be "scary" because they are run down hole in the walls or only Spanish is spoken, none of this matters to me, I just want good food. A good tamale place would be useful too, as a lot of times you won't find them at most places.
I love Tex-mex too, so if anyone knows of any good places like that, I'm open to suggestions too. I really don't know what you'd call it around here, Americanized Mexican?

Just let this post fall down, I should have searched first.
This thread seems to be a good source from people in the same boat as me:

Dos Taquitos on Creedmor Road is pretty good. My wife is from Texas and says it's the best she's had in this area (and we've tried quite a few).

I agree! Keep an eye out for a second Dos Taquitos location opening up in Downtwon Raleigh. The owenrs have been rennovating a place downtown for some time. I hope to see it open up soon.

Cheap Mexican: El Rodeo - Something about this place just works for me. Even while living in Arizona I found myslef sometimes craving some El Rodeo.
Moderate price: Dos Taquitos
Expensive/Creative: Jibarra (Sawmill & Six Forks)

So how would you describe Jibarra? There was a place in Austin called Z Tejas that I'd describe the same way, curious if it's like that. The best part is fancy Mexican is still cheap compared to say an expensive steak place like Ruth's Chris, Sullivan's, Fleming's, Morton's, etc.

I certainly wouldn't expect to get a combination plate at Jibarra. They take some common Mexican dishes and do some inventive things with them. Some if it is using unexpected ingredients, and they have a great presentation. While cheaper than somewhere like Ruth's Chris, the $12 margaritas can do some damage to the wallet quickly! Regardless, its worth it.

The best Mexican restaurant by far is in Knightdale, next to Lowes Food!
You have got to try their food. We use to eat there every week. Not anymore, no money now.
We tried every one else, no one compares.
