I have a friend coming in town that is older and not very mobile and she wants to "see Raleigh" this Saturday - basically have a driving tour of Raleigh that would involve not getting out of the car. I think she just wants a feel of the city, etc. Any ideas where I can go?
All I've come up with:
Fayetteville St.
NC State (but not near the fair due to traffic!)
Are there any good roads to drive through that are pretty?
Are there any rich neighborhoods with beautiful houses?
Historic neighborhoods?
Any other sites that are impressive from a car?
I know the ideal would be to hit the mountains or the beach, but I've really only got Saturday to work with and she really wants to get a feel for Raleigh.
A good drive would be Glenwood Ave into Five Points, pass Hayes Barton Baptist Church, right on Harvey St to Jarvis, left on Stone and down to St Mary's St and on into Cameron Village. You could wander around some of the streets surrounding this and then head downtown on Hillsborough St. or via Clark to Smallwood/Peace St to avoid Hillsborough. Or from Harvey take stone/Cowper, or, Glenwood to Anderson, to Six Forks and stop at North Hills for a drink or walk around. From downtown you could tour Historic Oakwood, stop at Krispy Kreme, and then Person, to Wake Forest Rd, to North Hills. If you want to show an old town, go out to wake forest, see the Seminary and local streets and then drive thru heritage subdivision to show new homes. These areas all have historic or hi end homes. You can't go wrong. i often do tours of the triangle and above are some of the routes I take. People are always surprised at how nice these streets are. Good luck!
