Boone, hands down! Grandfather Mountain........swinging bridge and zoo there are both very enjoyable. Blowing Rock......great views and four year old can run around (it is a very quick trip). I never made it over to Tweetsie, but hear it is fun. Mystery Hill is a lot of fun. Linville falls and Linville caverns are fun too. I have three children and I find these places to be a nice balance of what parents will enjoy and kids will either enjoy or tolerate......................how much can little ones enjoy taking in beautiful views. Asheville is too far of a drive for a quick weekend trip. We went there this summer for several days and enjoyed stuff that is more for warm weather like Smokey Mountain Jet boats and sliding rock.
Boone. One more local feature to suggest: Check out Hebron Rock Colony. Takes a tiny bit of easy sleuthing to find, but makes for a wonderful half-day of kid-friendly rock climbing. Google it for tips and pictures.
