There were news reports of numerous one-way rentals coming out of the NY area in connection with the recent storms there. Makes me wonder if the car rental companies have a need to get some cars returned up that way, for which the prices might be reasonable. Worth calling around, perhaps.

It sounds like he was talking about a round trip rental.
A few years ago we had an unlimited mileage rental for a round trip to NY....calll around ask - we rented at the airport. I'm pretty sure we used Budget.
I had to do a few rentals when coming to check it out here and to fly back home to tie up lose ends. Each time, I checked hotwire and priceline and got the same rates on each site for an economy car. I went with dollar a couple times-one time they even gave me an upgrade for no reason. Renting the car in Raleigh was MUCH cheaper than the big city I flew into. Car rental prices here are not too bad and they have daily and weekly rates that include mileage. I declined their overpriced insurance.
If you are a member of Sams, BJS or Costco might check their websites. They have deals with many of the rental companies and their prices might be lower than hotwire, priceline etc. I rented a mini-van for a week little over a year ago, and BJS price was lower than the online travel sites.
I used enterprise to go up to NY round trip and had no issues. Most rentals are for unlitmted miles now days. Try using carrentalsavers.com, you can search by a bunch of different discounts and can cancel your order free of charge at any time.
