When I used to go to Canada for weekends for a nice relaxing time at a B&B, we'd hear big BOOMS, and I found out it was a cannon that the farmers would set off to scare off crows that ate their crops. But it was more end of summer.
They use them in the U.S. as indicated by the article below. I also found they are used in Florida.
I launched my boat from Upper Barton Creek off Six Folks Rd this morning and the dock was covered with some type of explosive covering material. Smelled like spent gun powder. Not sure what went on there but I'm sure it was a pretty wild and loud scene. Don't know why you would need to go to such extremes to hunt deer. I have to dodge them almost every time I drive to the lake in the predawn.
Not sure where you are but there is a sign on New Bern that they are exploding stuff to repair sewers.
I was just wondering about this - there was a lot of this type of noise in SW Raleigh tonight, and it was the only thing that made sense. Very much like fireworks (including the reverberations from the buildings). I found myself rather agitated, and then figured there were probably better things in this world at which to be agitated .

I'm just into Franklin county, but the area where this happened was in Wake. As I said, I've become aware of the hunters nearby, though the fact that ncjeff said there is no firearm hunting on Sunday is strange. I heard several what I thought were gun shots then 10 mins later, the big one that brought fire trucks. There may have been an earlier one but I was inside making noise. If this had been happening in the past, I didnt think locals would call 911.
