Check out Saxapahaw. Its got kind of an Asheville feel, IMO. Really small town right on the Haw river south of Mebane. I did a quick google and saw rentals in your range.
Saxapahaw's about 15-20 minutes from Carrboro. I drive it daily during the week. The new restored condos, though, are not cheap. Beautimous, but not cheap. The older mill houses might be an option and there are a few newer developments (or at least one). Other crossroads to check out include Eli Whitney and Snow Camp, but these really are crossroads with maybe a country store and feed store. Not that Saxapahaw's much more than a crossroads—just a lovely crossroads.
Pittsboro gives better options for getting to RTP as well as Chapel Hill/Carrboro and Durham. Saxy gives better options for getting to the Triad. It's about 20-25 minutes from Saxy to Burlington.
Check out Durham and Hillsborough for sure. They both meet your needs, although because of your budget it will be easier to find something in Durham. Hillsborough is not cheap and will be harder to find a rental large enough in your price range. It's a small town with much less to choose from rental wise.
I live between Mebane and Hillsborough. Mebane is a nice town and very affordable, but it is much more conservative with fewer options for those of us who tend to lean left, shop and eat local, and consider themselves foodies.
We'll be settling in Hillsborough next year because of location and the fact I love the town. I am closer to downtown Mebane, but always find myself in Hillsborough. Better park and trail system too, that allows dogs! Unlike Lake Michael in Mebane. Unless this has changed in that past year.
What I do like about Mebane is Kenyons Meat Market and Moes, since they now serve all natural, grass fed, pasture raised food.
I will say I'm partial to Durham and Hillsborough because I grew up there. I've learned "location, location, location" the hard way!
I agree that Mebane is not the place for a foodie. However, growing up gay in Mebane wasn't difficult for me. It's more conservative than Chapel Hill or Carrboro but far better than Burlington. Also, because of its rapid growth, it's become more diverse and more options for food are coming our way. We already have a city-sponsored community garden and we're getting greenways and a public art program. That's not exactly republican-style small government...especially for a city of 11,000.
Im curious where did the OP finally settle? I will be working in Mebane and looking in the same areas!
