Well this is amusing being my first snow here in Raleigh since I moved from the Midwest. Never seen such noise made about 2-4 inches of snow. I call that "just another Friday in January".

You should have been here the year 1/2 inch caused 10 hour traffic jams and students spending the night in school because they couldn't get home. Of course the snow melting and refreezing had a lot to do with that.

Not sure where you grew up but it does not need to be below 32 for flakes to fall. Whether it sticks is a different matter.

Temp is supposed to drop quickly near daybreak, so expect icy roads regardless tomorrow morning.

More than snow accumulation, I worry about ice on a road surface at 30°--32°

exactly. it wasn't the snow, it was the culmination of ice & school buses on the road too late & parents freaking out to get to their kids. it was the ICEPOCOLYPSE! (7.5 hours round trip for me to go from north hills down six forks to 540 to drop off a coworker at 540/falls of neuse back to where i resided then near lynn/six forks). we had a client from NJ in town for a deposition. when she came into our office the next morning she asked (quite literally) if it was like this everytime we got winter weather. heh.

Give it a few years, especially when you've been lulled into semi tropical complacency

Also, as noted, ice is the bigger problem down here. Fear the ice.

When you see a vehicle with the brake lights on, sitting still, that than begins to slide to the right and backwards, there just is not much that that driver can do, other than wish he had parked at a bar.
This video was on 440 Inner somewhere near Glenwood, IIRC.

Widespread quick ice is a bit scary.

Exactly! It's always the ice here. Snow typically is just fun and otherwise no big deal (as relates to road travel).

I do remember the ice of 2005 quite well. I was in my car about 2 hours longer than you. And seriously made an error in judgement drinking that whole, big cup of hot chocolate before I left work.

There was a storm in late 1999 or early 2000 where we had just a few inches. There ended up being hundreds of accidents. I seem to recall someone did a survey at the time of folks in the accidents and found that about half were from the north, half from the south.

That always reminded me that due to a variety of factors, winter driving here isn't like up north. I figure safe just to stay home and avoid the mess.
