Merchants can ship here. Individuals can't.

I have a friend in Chile who can get high-quality wines for a few dollars a bottle, but he can't ship them to me.

Not true of some other states.

The biggest bummer about ABC stores is not so much the price, but the selection. There has been a renaissance in small distilleries in the US in recent years, and there are some extremely fine liquors and cordials that are impossible to get here in NC.

From the ABC website:

"It is unlawful for any person who is an out-of-state retail or wholesale dealer in the business of selling alcoholic beverages to ship or cause to be shipped any alcoholic beverage directly to any North Carolina resident who does not hold a valid wholesaler’s permit under Article 11 of this Chapter. "

You can get wine shipped directly from a winery out of state.

Yeah. Just not from out of the country. Sorry. Mixing my wine and liquor thoughts. It's too early to think much yet.

Funny, though. Just as I've been sitting here, I have found a couple of different websites that will ship liquor to NC and a few that won't. The law seems pretty clear, based on that blurb from the ABC site, but I wonder if there's a loophole that some retailers/distributors are using.

Quite possibly. I've seen sites where they'd ship to NC, also. A tequila site I once found comes immediately to mind.

I've also found merchants who will do it, but as far as I know, it's still technically illegal for them to ship liquor to anyone who doesn't hold an ABC permit. I've read that part of the law pretty extensively, mostly because I'd like to see it (and the ABC system in general) done away with!

Until 2003, it was also illegal for anyone to ship wine into the state, but that was changed after the law was found unconstitutional in Federal court. The NC ABC still makes out-of-state wine sellers get a direct shipment permit, though, so I still occasionally find a place that won't ship here.

I have been shipped wine and beer from the producers directly and retailers. I probably get too much shipped to me, well nah.

It would be great if they busted up the ABC system in NC, just so we could get some better selections and not stuck with the corporate brands exclusively. Nothing against Diageo but some more choice would be sweet.

I guess nothing really came of that exposure of the ABC boards being a tad bit in the bag of the corporate distillers did they. Plus they insane salaries.
