Who do I contact to secure information on non-profit tax exempt organizations operating in NC? I am interested in the financial information. Salaries, etc. prior to contributing.

Go to the website of the NC Secretary of State, MISSION STATEMENT, search for organizations that you are interested in under Charitable Solicitations, click on the organization's document filings, and review the 990 form. It has all the information you are seeking including salaries.

There are sites that give independent ratings of local and national charities. Those that I am familiar with include:

Charity Navigator
Better Business Bureau Charity Reviews
Charity Watch
Givewell

There are other sites, but I am unfamiliar with those and can't attest to the validity of their ratings.

Keep in mind that salaries paid to executives are not the ONLY measure of how efficiently a charity uses its donations. In fact, I think the percentage spent on collecting donations (i.e. marketing, fund raising, planned giving) is a better measure of how well a charity will spend my donations.

Guidestar is the other website that rates charities and provides financial information. You have to join though but it's free.
