My girlfriend and I are new to the area and have not yet established a regular dentist. However, she is in extreme pain and her face is swelling (I think her tooth may be infected and she may need a root canal). The dentists where we live near Wake Forest are all closed on Sundays or are do not have good reviews.
Can anyone please help by recommending a good, reputable dentist anywhere in the Triangle area that could possibly fit her in on a Sunday without her being an already established patient of theirs?
Every Emergency Room must have an oral surgeon on call. If 1800 for dental works doesn't work go to the ER. Be insistent. She can probably be tied over with antibiotics till Monday.
I agree—if you can't find a dentist a doctor should be able to get her some antibiotics. I have had a root canal and they wouldn't do it until I had been on antibiotics for 2 weeks first to get rid of as much of the infection as possible. The antibiotics knocked out the infection and the pain went with it. They did give me some vicodin, but I barely used it. I did use it the first few nights after I was prescribed the antibiotics before they knocked the infection back so I could sleep. Urgent Care might be able to prescribe for her.
Many people without health insurance go only to the ER for dental pain/work. (Not speaking about you). The ER will not be surprised to see someone with a dental issue. I'd go there, and then you'll see other threads on this forum about dentist recommendations for the area.
If you go to UNC Hospital there will be a Dentist from the Dental School on call.
If you have a dentist from your old home, does he have an emergency number? Maybe they can call in a script for pain/antibiotic. I was up in Jersey over the Holidays and my dentist from NC called in the meds to a local NJ pharmacy. I also had an infection and needed a root canal. I needed to complete the script before the dentist would do the root canal, like mentioned above...
You don't need to go to an ER with a dentist on-call because they aren't going to do any procedural work. The ED physician will call you in an antibiotic. You will, however, pay out the nose for the visit and will probably wait a long time. An urgent care would be able to do the same for much less and most likely much faster.
