CNN.com has the story about the fire and explosion. Also something in there about the company being fined earlier this year regarding some safety conditions.
My radio alarm went off this ---up here in Metro Detroit--- and the local news had the story about the explosion in Apex. Boy, I jumped out of bed fast because my husband is working down there working on the boarder of Apex. None of his employees showed up for work, most of them were evacuated. It sounds like a mess down there, I hope things can get cleared up safely & soon for everyone down in the Apex area! Keep Safe!
My thoughts and prayers are with all of you who are or will be impacted by this disaster. The story on CNN is that officials are saying that a good rain is the best thing that could happen as it will clean the air better than anything else could.
So far the subdivisions they have mentioned that were evacuated were Briarcliff, Waterford Green, Shepards Vineyard, Knollwood, Haddon Hall (which is HUGE, the biggest subdivision in Apex by far), and downtown Apex. If they are EAST of 55, they are in the evacuation zone.
CNN stated that the fire would not be put out by firehoses, because the water run off would contain chlorine toxins. They have decided to let the fire burn itself out. Now the rain coming in could cause the exact situation they were trying to avoid. The rain will clean the air, but now the toxins will wash down to the ground and bodies of water. It's problematic either way.
FWIW: I found it interesting that this chemical waste facility is owned by a company based in Michigan.
If you are east of 55, you've been ordered to evacuate. Something like 18000 people, more than half the town, have been evacuated. We're in Western Apex so we aren't in the evacuation zone, but good god is this place a ghost town. All of the schools in Apex are closed. So this has made national news? We wouldn't know because all of the network channels are all still breaking news live coverage and have been for 12 hours. The light rain is helping a little right now to supress the fire, while not threatening too much runoff, but heavy rain is expected later today and that could bring about a whole batch of new issues.
Yes, this has made national news. I'm on Long Island & it was all over the news. Now it's on AOL also. Stay safe. We'll be praying that everyone in the area is OK.
What a nightmare. My best to all those affected, and let's hope they are right about no lingering effects.
