I hope everyone related to the wreck itself is OK !!! There is a story right now on the N&O website about a train carrying spent radioactive waste that wrecked on the tracks at Shearon Harris Nuclear Plant today. Supposedly no spills at this time but I'm glad I decided not the live in that area (Holly Springs/Apex) Again best hopes that everyone in the surrounding area will be OK. Shearon Harris doesn't have the best record in relaying information when it needs too.

It is interesting that it happened last night (6:57pm) and it's just now posted. How is it news now?

newsobserver.com | Shearon Harris: Train derailed at plant (http://www.newsobserver.com/news/story/750470.html - broken link)

"Rail cars on a train carrying spent radioactive nuclear fuel derailed at the Shearon Harris nuclear plant in Wake County Thursday at 6:57 p.m. But the nuclear waste sustained no damage and there were no injuries, according to Progress Energy.

The train accident occurred on the nuclear plant property, about 25 miles southwest of Raleigh.

The train was traveling at about 4 m.p.h. to 5 m.p.h. and remained upright after the accident. Two rail cars jumped the tracks — a caboose and an empty flatbed car that was used as a buffer car. When transported by rail, nuclear waste is protected by reinforced concrete casks weighting 75 tons that are designed to withstand high-speed impact.

The cause of the accident was human error in preparing the tracks for the arrival of the train, according to Progress."

I'm not trying to minimize this, but the term "wreck" seems a little alarmist if you read the WRAL article.

Here's the story -
Shearon Harris: Train derailed at plant

Rail cars on a train carrying spent radioactive nuclear fuel derailed at the Shearon Harris nuclear plant in Wake County Thursday at 6:57 p.m.

The cause of the accident was human error in preparing the tracks for the arrival of the train, according to Progress.

The train was transporting spent nuclear fuel from the company's Brunswick nuclear plant south of Wilmington.

The company alerted local law enforcement and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, as required by law.
It was hardly a "train wreck" - but that does make for a catchier subject line, doesn't it?

How do newspapers find out about stuff like this at all? Is there a checklist at Shearon Harris that says..
"Things to do when a trail derails"
1) Make sure no hazardous conditions exist.
2) Call News & Observer and tell them nothing happened.

Does this not concern people living in this area? or would I be an alarmist if I said I was scared if this happened near me.

It doesn't concern me because of this statement...
"When transported by rail, nuclear waste is protected by reinforced concrete casks weighting 75 tons that are designed to withstand high-speed impact."

That seems pretty secure to me. Also, it's depleted fuel, which does not contain enough Uranium to cause a chain-reaction.

Default just so you know, Uranium is never spent!

It never dies, atleast not in our lifetime!

It becomes very unstable over time and the rods need to be removed and stored in subzero temperatures to keep from melting through anything it comes in contact with.

Uranium is very dangerous.

We have grown to tolerate a huge danger in our backyard. Only a matter of time before an incident.

There really are no options other than coal fired generators. However, they are just as toxic.

Jesus will return and restore things in there proper order.
