not as a homeowner, but as a renter. I had Triangle Area pretty high on my list to places to retire, but the research I've done lately, looks like COL is rapidly increasing. Which always happens when a place gets popular. But I don't want to move there and get eventually priced out.

Would Charlotte area be less expensive? I wouldn't think so, but thought I'd throw it in here for opinions.

thanks.

Depends on your expectations, current bills, and planned extracurricular activities.

Of course it's possible.

But no one can answer whether you'd be happy or not without knowing your expectations, needs, and wants.

Keep in mind NC has (relatively) high state income taxes....and while you won't be paying property taxes you do pay annual.personal use tax on cars plus tax on food, clothing etc. It allnadds up espnif you're on a fixed income.

How many would be living off that amount? If it's just you, I would say it's not only possible, but you'd have a descent quality of life. If you're $45K a year is after taxes, that would be around $3750 a month. Figure to pay $800-900 for a 1 bedroom apartment every month, and that should leave you plenty of money left over (even after utilities, car payment, etc).

Snort! As a Wake County teacher, that is just slightly less than what I make working full time, so I don't know why it wouldn't be enough to retire on. And I have two kids to support!

Easily.
Especially if you sprout out from the city of Raleigh and stay in cities/towns like Louisburg, Zebulon, Wilson, Smithfeild, Bunn, and so on.
My mom makes 40K a year, plus 8K in pension fund, and she lives(rents) in a gorgeous on an acre and a half of land, with 4 bedrooms an over 1700sq ft.

You're really only screwed if you have some god awful car note to pay every month that's in excess of 500 bucks, or end up paying 300-400 a month in electricity because you live somewhere that's not inculcated properly(like my friends o_o).
Otherwise 30k+ will get you in a decent place in the Triangle area.

yup, just me (and hopefully a dog), no car payment, no debt. Just the standard monthly bills...
and I'd be coming from CA so income taxes are alot less than here (although I know NC doesn't give retirees much of a break as far as tax benefits).

I think you could own a home here and live comfortably on 45k. It's all about budgeting your money and if you do it right you won't have any reason for concern.
