We have been looking online at available houses in NC and wondering this- why are there no fences in people's back yards? Seems that there are often no fence more often than not. We have two small awesome dogs that we need a fence for. Just curious. Also are there leash laws in NC?
Most people install invisible fences if they have dogs. It is less expensive and more attractive, generally speaking.
Other than that, I think the number of fences reflects the open-nature of the people around here. People are more trusting and open and thus don't feel the need to close off or hide their property.
HOA'S are probably a big reason if you're talking about subdivisions. We don't have an HOA and it was easy to put up a fence. My friend lives in a subdivision with a rather stringent HOA and it's taken over 6 months of going before the board, trying to get hers approved. That's my guess.
There are a lot of newer houses in the Triangle. Most don't come with a fence already installed. A lot of new homeowners don't want to spend a few grand installing a fence.
YYes, most houses here aren't built with fences, people install them if they need them. My back yard is completely fenced in, but only because my neighbors all have fences for their dogs! My neighborhood is probably 50-50. Those who have them typically seem to be dog owners.

Just remember that those invisible fences don't keep other animals out. So if a wandering dog or fox or whatever is in your neighborhood, it still can get in your 'fenced backyard.'
We wouldn't trust an invisible fence. Our dogs are very small and we would just need a small fence to keep them in. It just seems strange as I haven't seen so many houses in one area with no fences before. But in Denver there are lots and lots of dogs and maybe that is why. Thanks for the info!
