Thumbs up Anyone thinking of moving to the Raleigh, NC area

I'm originally from NY but moved from Pennsylvania last year to the Raleigh, NC area. My wife and three kids love it down here. We have met alot of people from the northeast as well as other areas of the country. The real estate market is still strong in the Raleigh,NC area. It is becoming a buyers market due to the surplus of new homes available that are already built. If anyone has any questions about the Raleigh, NC area, let me know.

My wife and I are thinking about moving to the raleigh area. I am looking for a nice neighborhood and family oriented. I have 2 young kids and want to be near good schools. It seems like where we live now we are the younger parents, hopefully we can find a neighborhood with young families. How is the weather? Is there a lot of tornados? Is there places to shop for my wife? Any info would be great. We are moving from Massachussetts. The prices up here are way to high. We own a house now so we would have to sell it first. Thank you for your time.

I lived in the triangle area for 6 years. The Raleigh area is a very nice area with mild winters and long hot summers, for a northeasterner. To Hot and humid for me. You will definately find a nice home with a large lawn in one of the surrounding towns. Low taxes to.

My children went to the Johnston County schools. I was told that it was a good district however I was not impressed with the teachers my children had. I thought schools were better in NY. My sister still lives there and her daughter is doing fine in school so it depends on the exerience of the teacher. If you are a teacher they are definately short on supply there. Also, my children had to change schools every year or every few years because of redistricting.

Raleigh does have a lot to do. We loved the downtown area they seemed to have something going on most weekends. And it is only about an 1 1/2 to the beach. And yes lots of shopping places there is definately no lack in that.

Well, the hardest part is selling your home in Massachusetts. I have a friend who just moved here from Boston and is having a hard time selling his home back in Boston.
Now, it is beautiful down here and the weather is great. The winters are not bad at all. As far as tornadoes, I've never experienced one, but there is always a possibility, wherever you live. There are tons of places to shop for your wife. A really good place to live where there are a lot of stores is Brier Creek, located in Raleigh.
Here are some things to consider before moving. Do you have family here? Will you miss your family? Will you be transferring jobs or will you have to look for one? How much of a home can you afford? How big of a home? Do you want a big yard for the kids? How far are you willing to travel for work?
Remember, along with the growth of an area comes congestion, overcrowding, traffic, etc. Please visit the area first, before you make plans to move.
I love it down here and so does my wife and three kids. I would never move back north.
Let me know if you have any more questions. I would love to answer them.

What is the job market like? We may move there from Allentown, PA on a transfer. It would be my wife transferring, so I would need the job. My experience comes in operations management (retail), but I'm pretty much dead set on not being in retail anymore unless I have to. What about pay scales? We were originally thinking Orlando, but we think NC may be the better ticket.

Why are you moving? I thought PA is a great state to live in for jobs, things to do, etc. Me and a few of my classmates from college are thinking about moving to Philly (specifically Chestnut Hill or King of Prussia area) beginning summer. I heard Philly has an amazing nightlife? Raleigh is dead

I'm not a "nightlife" kind of person. I'm more of a homebody. I've lived in PA most of my life (5 years in Orlando and 3 years in Minnesota) and am just tired of the area. Wife has an opportunity to transfer with her job, and NC seems nice. We can transfer to Orlando with my job, but I'm not liking what I am hearing about Orlando these days. Also the market for hookers isnt what it used to be....just teasin!!!!!

If you are young, I guess Philly is good. Oh...I'm also sick of the cold winters.

You might want to explore that a bit. I've heard that some jobs in Raleigh don't pay well compared to other markets, while others (Information Technology) pay very well. I have also heard that there are a lot of retail and service jobs available. I think you'd probably want to have a job before you come unless you are a big risk taker.

...It's also had about 400 murders and 1000 cases of rape over each of the last 2 years (based on 1.5M approximately). So - be careful. As a point of reference - the Entire state of NC had 540 murders and 2495 rapes for a population of 8.5M. So - that's roughly four times more murders. and 2.5 time more rapes (per 100,000 people) than here.

Like with here - the employment market is so so (meaning good in some field to stone cold in others), depending on what kind of occupation you're looking for. And if you think Wake County has problems with schools....

Don't mean to burst your bubble. It's a big place, and a big city - just be REALLY aware of what you do. You ain't in kansas no more, Toto.

I grew up in King of Prussia, so if you have any specific questions about the area, let me know.
