Lightbulb Security Systems

Reading through all of the security system threads, I just thought I'd pop in and give a little advice... those signs in peoples yards...I made up my own <pretend> security company and put a sign in the front yard, as well as small ones on the doors and windows. I did this because when I was inquiring with our neighbors what securtiy system we actually should use, they said it really didnt matter, you can pay $16 a month for monthly monitoring from a local company or $26 a month from a larger company, bottom line is it depends on how fast your police department responds. We havent had the best luck with quick responses from our PD. So I figured why pay the money just to NOT have the PD show up in a timely matter? Now we have 4 dogs~ 2 inside 2 outside -all the time. And a gun. however, if someone is breaking in, they will never know you have a gun, but always know you have a dog.
Honestly, if someone was lucky enough to get past the 2 outside dogs, they would see the <pretend> Walmart cameras on the house along with a sign that says the house is under video survellaince( something else I fabricated).
Unfortunately these are the times we live in, but perception can your life!

If a fire breaks out and I'm not home, I don't want to wait for a neighbor to notice the flames shooting out of my roof before the fire department is dispatched!
This is sadly one of the hardest things to convince people of. We now have smoke/heat detectors that are actually monitored, so instead of just making a loud noise they actually send for the fire department as soon as they go off. Fire can happen any time so you may not be home and by the time anyone else notices it is usually too late to save anything.

Sadly though most people are just worried about burglary and are blind to this threat.

That is funny, but also true. The first line of protection is the outside of the house (stickers and yard signs). I had a customer who honestly couldn't afford a system at the time so I just gave her some stickers and signs to put around her house. I figured, even if I wasn't making any money, I was at least helping her to prevent a burglary.

I went with CPI, I was very pleased with the intial contact (I made), the install, the follow-up, customer service and overall experience with them. I did it more as a deterent as I am in a totally new neighborhood and figured "why not" and I will save money on homeowners as well. I like the system CPI offered because not only is it a security system, you also receive fire protection monitoring as well...so if I am at work and the house should catch fire, the fire department would be dispatched immediately. I also like the "live connection" with CPI, they don't call your phone, they come on live through the system (speaker centrally located) in the home. If there was to be a break-in with/without me home and I was unable to answer them, they could hear what was going on and dispatch help. Also, you have a panic feature if you experience a health problem, you can have emergency dispatched immediately...I think it's more for peace of mind than anything...a few dollars a month to be pro-active to me is not a waste of money...and as far as having those big dogs...I am sure if a crook threw a few steaks, the dogs would be pointless...and who wants those huge dogs inside the house...to messy and dirty for me...what's the saying "to each his own" something like that...good luck with your choice...CPI would be my choice...

Expect to pay $30 a month or so. When I last got a quote, I believe they include the system with a 3 year contract.

We have the PIP system.

170 (maybe more now) pounds of solid black German shepherd...who really doesn't like anyone, except us.

Lots of people think that but actually it is quite cheap. Some give the system away for free, those are usually to be avoided as they are almost certainly "dealers" which are independent companies that do the installation work and then sell your account to whichever big name company they say they are representing. They usually do very shoddy work and have very little reason to treat you like a customer should be treated (once the work is done they have nothing at all to do with you from there on out).

To get a reliable system make sure that you are speaking to a direct employee of the company, whether it be ADT, CPI, Guardian, or Brinks. In these cases you will get better equipment and better customer support, though they will charge for installation. Typical installation costs depend on how many doors you have. A normal, three door home usually costs $170 to start and then if you need to add anything it goes up from there, but the base package is usually sufficient for anybody's burglary needs.
