I am a teacher moving to Durham next week, and need a gym that will be close and affordable to me! I will be in the Woodcroft area near the Southpoint Mall and would like information on a great gym. Right now I get the following:

Sauna
Free classes (body pump, zumba, step aerobics, ab classes, etc.)
Women's area with weights/machines
Access to trainers (extra fee)
Clean locker area
Large Gym with many machines and weights located in a shared men's/women's area

I get all of this for $15 a month. I would like something similar for that price, but I've researched in that area and memberships cost anywhere from 30-50 a month in Durham.

Can anyone help me?!

Thanks!!

That is an amazing price. Unless your new employer subsidizes your costs, I don't see how you can match it. YMCA's generally are the lowest cost.

You could check out Fitness Connection in RTP/Durham - typically less than 10 minutes from Southpoint.

Fitness Centers In North Carolina

I've been going to the Raleigh location, so no direct knowledge of the RTP location, but these are former "Gold's" gyms so typically fairly well equipped. Price range from $10 to $20/month.

Fitness World will be closer than Fitness Connection to your location mentioned, so the trade-off of a more convenient location vs cost may be worth it to you.

I personally have to add that Fitness Connection is not the cleanest place in my opinion. I would suggest taking a tour of the actual places you are considering first.

@victoria Where in Michigan are you from? My daughter moved to Durham from Grand Rapids in December and loves it. She just graduated from Law School and is studying for the bar exam.

A single adult membership at the Y in Durham is $45.74. By far one of the most expensive.

My wife used to go here. $17.00 a month. She said it was so convient to her job that she overlooked how old the place was. Needed a major update. Just her observation. The site says they are under new management. Reno and new equipment coming, they say.
