So we have a pet wood pecker who attacks our siding every morning. Aside from the annoying noise, what kind of damage is this thing doing and what do we do?

He's actually making as much racket as possible to attracts a mate. We had one who would rattle incessantly off the metal top of our chimney. I see one now that pecks loudly on top of a metal pole light.

I experience the same woodpecker saga every year. I usually have 1 or 2 pecking on the metal downspouts making racket. The pecking usually stops after a month or so, once mating season is over.

When we lived in Cary, we had cedar siding on our home and wood peckers sure loved it!

Many of our neighbors would put up a fake snake close to the area that the woodpeckers enjoyed. That stopped it.

I would take a hard look at where he is pecking. As others said, it could be he is getting breakfast or he/she may be just making a lovely mating noise...

Get a termite inspection - we did last year when we had one. No termites, just making noise for his mate. I spent 2 das chasing him away but not before he destroyed my siding.

We had them pecking on our house siding last year. They do not like shiny objects that move, so hang pie tins or some other bright shiny object that is lite enough to blow in the wind in the areas they're pecking. Sometimes this works, but other times they'll just move to a different area on the house.

We had bats one year and woodpeckers the next, so I feel your pain.

Good luck.....!

We are visited by a woodpecker every year. We haven't seen any damage. He just likes to wake me out of a sound sleep to torture me while trying to get his groove on. ;-) He only hangs around a few weeks and then he takes off.
