A Particularly Dangerous Situation Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been issued for central and eastern NC through 10 PM EDT. Widespread damaging winds up to 80 MPH are expected across the watch area. Dangerous lightning, large hail, and isolated tornadoes are also possible.
The Triangle will see the threat from 4:30 to 6 PM. Exercise caution during evening commutes!

If you know someone who is out on a lake, pool, pass the message. If you and have afternoon travels this storm is maybe quick ugly doozie. Lower Patio Umbellas, charge cell phones, tablets and laptops and if you have open space in garage park the car in it.

Thanks for the warning...this is scary...hopefully it won't be as intense as forecasted but with temps in the 90's today I don't see the threat and severity diminishing...ugh... Stay safe everyone!

Why must they always be scheduled to arrive during the commute home? Mother Nature should work on her timing!

Reports of wind gusts up to 58 mph in Winston-Salem. Winds of this strength can knock down trees.

Don't let the blue skies fool you. The threat for severe thunderstorms is increasing across central NC. 70 MPH winds have been observed in some thunderstorms across southwestern VA.

I'm near downtown Durham, and within minutes it went from being sunny to being Very Scary - super windy, sudden darkness, totally creepy. We are staying away from the windows in case of branches falling. Good luck everyone! Stay safe.

I'm betting we're going to either catch the tail end of this or miss it entirely...near the intersection of 54 and 40.

Hi all,

I'm new to the area living in chapel hill. Is it safe for me to use electronic devices or is chapel hill also feeling the brunt of the storm? I hardly have any rain in my apartment on my campus, but I've turned off corded electronic devices to be safe for now. I apologize for the dumb question but I'm from the NW where we never see this stuff and am staying alone, so I'm not sure what to do lol.

You should not use any "corded" device (like a regular phone) during the thunderstorm for your personal safety .
To protect devices like a TV from a power surge you really need to unplug them. Turning them off leaves them vulnerable.

I'm off of Tryon near Trailwood Drive....we had some winds earlier but now it is just a thundershower. The power flickered maybe 6 or 7 times, but that was about it. Not much going on here.

Once the gust front passes it seems to be a pretty mild TS. The gust front on this one was so strong because the storm is moving so quickly.
