Use a glass cutter and cut the mirror into small enough pieces to carefully get in the bottom of a large plastic trash can. Use a long heavy object to pound it all into thousands of tiny pieces. Pour it all into a bag or small box and toss it into the trash. Use gloves, jacket and eye protection
My thought was, its huge and I wouldn't want a kid getting hurt by me doing it that way.

This sounds, good, and I was thinking that but I'm not sure how to get it there. It is still mostly in tact. Just the corner was broken. I don't want it in our home either since we also have four kids : )
If it's just a corner that's broken I'd post it on freecycle or the free section of Craigslist and someone may take it off your hands for you. I could see many crafters having uses for it — mosaics, etc.
I'd just wrap the pieces up in newspaper and/or plastic (or even foil), tape it up, etc and put in a regular trash bag, down in the middle where it's not liable to poke through the bag, and throw out with regular trash.
