When we moved here we came from a traditional calendar to a ear round, so my kids started school about 3 weeks late. I don't recommend if, bc depending on the grade level, a fair amount of work will have been missed. My kids were little, so it worked out fine. But it was hard to jump right in after all the kids were settled already.

If your kids are middle school or older, you'd be wise to talk to the schools and see what you can do to introduce the material they will be missing while you are still out of town. Teachers often have entire lessons online and available to the students. I don't mean to sound am alarm--I am sure the teachers will not hold it against your kids--but the older they get, and the more the county seems to get flipped out about high stakes testing, the more pressure ends up on the students. No fun.

Will your 9 year old be going to a Year Round School or a Traditional calendar school? Year Round tracks 1,2 and 3 started July 8th. Track 4 starts July 29th. Traditional starts near the end of August.

Some year round schools can place the child in another track while tracked out to try to catch them up and so they do not miss so many days of school.

End of year tests (EOGs) start in 3rd grade so the 9 year old will be missing a big chunk of information missing a month or more of school.

There are tutors in the area you could hire to catch up on the information missed or go over it with your child yourself.

Hope it all works out.

According to one of your other posts you'll be here in mid-Sept. If you are going to traditional school which will start 8/26, I wouldn't worry about it too much. You'll miss a few weeks of school (but 2 days off as well in the mix) but at that age, your child should be able to catch up rather quickly.

IMHO, so many of our schools have revolving doors (lots of kids moving in and out all through the year) that coming in a month after the first day will not be particularly noticed by anyone.

maybe in High school or middle it would be a challenge, but elementary kids usually adapt pretty well, and I have observed them to be pretty welcoming to newcomers.
