If you'll read my post again, you'll see that I did start sending his lunch.

I also imposed consequences for his poor choices. You're talking to a mom who is very alert, reviewed his lunch account purchases on at least a weekly basis, and did everything I could (including punishing my son) to solve the problem. But I can't follow him around all day, and I have certain expectations of what is allowed in an elementary school setting. Children that age can't be expected to make choices like that without adult supervision.

lamishra, I'm not sure how the list of snacks you provided has anything to do with the moon pies and chips offered at my son's school, but it sure sounds good. My former post also said that I DID impose the limits on his account as you suggested, and was ultimately told, "tough, we're too busy to worry about that."

The list of allowed a la carte can be found WCPSS website. Moonpies are NOT on there and never have been. Baked chips are.

How schools handle lunchrooms seems to be a site by site issue. I know in our school teachers are expected to sit in the cafeteria. The kindergarten and first grade teachers actually go through the line with the students for the majority of the year. After the students are done eating lunch, teachers are required to wash the tables. For the poster who suggested we are taking a "break", we are eating our "lunch". Try eating lunch everyday with 300 students, not a very pleasurable experience. I know when I was "allowed" to eat lunch as an adult with adults, I spent half that time grading papers or preparing for the next class.

FOR the k. And 1st teachers must serve the food....open kids milks or other things they cant open themselves(including stuff sent from home) ...deal with lack of lunch money (sometimes calling home for it) ....illness(cleaning up vomit..custodians arent required to do lunchrooms )escorting to the bathroom....wiping tables and sweeping floors. In between all that..teachers r suppose to est their own lunch in the cafeteria with the kids...with usually only one microwave for @ 10 teachers in the lunchroom at one time. Oh yeah....teachers also must line their kids up after in a quiet and orderly manner (while they r cleaning tables and sweeping floors on the other end of the lunchroom))..most of the time hoping a fight don't break out while the kids r unattended across the lunchroom....

My daughter has insisted on bringing her lunch to school ever since she saw the child in front of her take a hot dog from the bin, drop it on the floor, and throw it back in the bin. Problem solved.
