That would add about an extra 7 miles and get you around the heart of 40 traffic, however it can also get backed up on the southern half of the beltline after you get back on from Rt. 1.

I would go that way if it were me and it was 5:00-5:30 PM

True, but Clayton is south of Chapel Hill, too, so it's not really that out of the way depending on where in Chapel Hill you are coming from. Also, by taking I-40 you are heading north to head south again. And for me, living in southern Chapel Hill, getting to I-40 is several miles, too. When I put my address into Google Maps, it gives me both options.

Option 1 is 54 to 40 to 70. It's 47 miles and 53 minutes in current traffic conditions.

Option 2 is Mt. Carmel Church Rd/Farrington Point Rd to 64 East to 40 to 70. It is 49.3 miles and 62 minutes in current traffic conditions.

I am going to be heading out to Selma again on Friday and will be doing option 2 again, so I will see what weekday traffic is like, although it will be earlier in the day, more like 2 PM rather than 5 PM.

yup but thee are scenarios where adding mileage saves actual time....knew many people on LI who would go 10 to 15 miles out of their way to save a good 20 minutes off a near hour commute.

Exactly. 751 is in no way shorter mile-wise than I-40 for me but during rush hour it makes a huge difference in travel time.

I work in Pittsboro and live in Carrboro, and when I need to swing by Target or Southpoint after work, I take 64 to 751. I am always amazed at the volume of southbound traffic and high speed of both directions of traffic on that 2 lane road. I'd say people are going between 55 and 60+ and while the speed limit is 55 for most of the road, I think that's a bit high. Yes, of course it's the speed LIMIT and you should always drive at a speed that is safe for the conditions, but there is no way that 55-60 mph is a safe speed during rush hour on 751 and the signs make people think that's ok.

I am extremely vigilant on 751 re: drifting on-coming traffic; I'm surprised there aren't more head-on collisions. So it might be faster, but I don't think it's safer, at least not at rush hour (though I know I-40 at rush hour isn't exactly safe either, but at least it's divided). Both 751 and I-40 make me extremely thankful for the very little traffic on 15-501 from CH to Pittsboro.
