I wouldn't be surprised if that part of your problem. I know when I had TWC, my download speeds were MUCH better during the day on weekdays than in the evenings.

Granted, my modem is older, but I have the same issues. Especially over the last few weeks. Better than a full outage, but consistently dropping.

We have UVerse and for the past two months speeds have varied. Sometimes so slow that pages won't load. Repair person came out and replaced a cable he said was crimped. Speeds still vary.

Having moved from Long Island to the Raleigh area I can honestly say that this internet is terrible. The speeds they claim are far from what you get and if the speeds slow down even more during heavy traffic times then they need to do something about it. Time Warner Cable is one of the biggest companies in the country in this industry and to be blunt their service sucks. On my worst day on Long Island the speeds matched the best days here. It's really the only negative I've encountered in my few months down here. Well, that, pizza, and bagels. Anyway, high-speed internet should be just that. It shouldn't be high-speed-as-long-as-no-one-else-is-on internet. I don't want to overpay for crappy stuff. That's why I left Long Island.

I have been with Time Warner for more than 10 years, mostly because I used to game online, and needed the higher (10+ mbps) speeds that they provided. However, when I went away from the 3-play bundle (TV, phone and internet), the cost of the 30 mbps speed went up to $84.43 per month. When I stopped gaming online, and looked to lower my monthly costs, I was given 3 choices:

30 mbps = $84.43
15 mbps = $55.00
3 mbps = $48.00 (with "special discount", it could be lowered to $35.00)

To me, these prices are ridiculous, especially the last one. 3 mbps is not even basic internet. Many satellite internet services provide up to 10 mbps for much less than $40 per month. The other problem is that Time Warner has a bad habit of raising their rates on everything on a regular basis, and with them trying to merge with Comcast, that will only get worse. When I used to have their 3-Play package, my bill started at $99 / month. Within less than 2 years, it was at $185, without anything being added or changed. That's when I dropped the TV in favor of DirecTV, and the phone in favor of Verizon. I also had multiple problems with the TV service and phone service dropping out at random times for no reason, sometimes for hours on end, and the customer service people were useless. They kept telling me it was the cable box (apparently, it was the cable box 6 times in 11 months). Once I had dropped to just internet, my internet service has dropped out on a regular basis as well, and I get the same excuses (it's the modem--8 times in less than a year). So far, I've been with DirecTV for 2 1/2 years, and Verizon the same, and the only time either have dropped out were during powerful storms (twice), and both came right back when the power did. No excuses from either set of customer service people--just solutions. If there was a problem, they came out immediately, and fixed it.

I would recommend Time Warner only to those you absolutely loathe, hate, and wish the most hateful things on. Because if you wish them to experience the warmer parts of Hell, Time Warner will make sure they get a nice room booked.

Call Earthlink. Buy cable modem service through them (they resell Time Warner.) Save a bundle.

It's an unfortunate compromise with cable internet- shared bandwidth amongst subscribers on a node (i.e., like sharing a road or pipe). There can only be so many channels designated for cable modems and television broadcast on a hybrid fiber-coaxial (HFC) network.

Efficient network routing and management can help alleviate this issue but no one said it's easy.
