Why not look nearer the coast, at New Bern, We need more vets here, only a handful, and I don't think we have had snow in 4 or 5 years.

Plenty - my vet lives in Hillsborough and her practice is in Durham, on the Chapel Hill side. I mention it because it seemed like you weren't sure about Cary as the central point (though Hillsborough is within long driving distance).

Look in eastern Chatham County, fairly near to US 1 or US 64 for easy commute into Cary.
Pittsboro and points east.
New Hill area, in either Chatham County or Wake County.

My area in a community called New Hill still has several large tract properties, mostly from 10 to as much as 100 acres. New Hill is just to the south and east of Apex. Driving time to Cary is not long at all, generally 10 to 20 min from where I live, although it could be longer. I have a 20 acre parcel and love it. Development is moving out this way, however, and the big tracts may not last that much longer.

The more "country" areas would likely be north of Raleigh, towards Creedmoor, which is not the direction of Cary. Are you wedded to Cary? That actually is probably the most congested part of the region and will get worse.

East of Raleigh, towards Wendell and Zebulon, is still quite rural as well, but an easy straightaway into the city.

People friendly here? what gave you that impression???
Just kidding, the people here are great!
I know nothing about rural areas, although I moved froma large city to Clayton-but I'm in a subdivision so I don't consider this rural.
But when we came to explore the area, we loved the Radisson hotel in Cary-I think that was it. they had great breakfast and complimentary late afternoon drinks in the lounge.
