My wife and I are moving to the Chapel-boro area in less than three weeks and we have a few loose ends to tie up, one of which being our banking situation. We are partial to doing business with credit unions and, occasionally, small banks. Does anyone have a personal recommendation about which company they use or have heard good things about? Thanks for your thoughts in advance!

If you have a connection to state employment (including a family member who works for the state of NC) you can join the State Employees Credit Union which is great. That's the main one in CH/C.

Other than that I think there are a couple of Coastal Federal CUs located in Durham. Their ATMs work with SECU ATMs w/ no service fee I think.

I wish I was employed by the state! I noticed SECU when I was looking, but I don't think I qualify for their field of membership. Has anyone used Harrington Bank at all?

Do you have any relatives with SECU? Depending on that relationship, might be good enough to get you in. Also sharing a household with someone that is a member will get you in. You see the drill. If you dig hard enough I am sure you can find a way to qualify if you so choose.
