I have been meaning to get set up with a dentist but have been putting it off because I am very anxious about going. Woke up last night in excruciating pain and I'm thinking it's either a cracked tooth or an abscess. Do any dentists do emergency treatment on Sunday? And what is the extra cost to get this done?
Sorry it not humorous when your groggy and want to scream. IMO I would get the heaviest milligram of Motrin and take 2 of them and repeat in 6 hours and wait til Monday if it was me. Weekends are always been for me when tooth pain always occur.
I did find some posts in a similar thread.

Thank you for the information. I had called West Cary Dental a couple weeks ago to set up cleaning appointments but found they were out of network and wanted to find out what it would cost. But then my insurance gave me the run-around and wouldn't tell me what it would cost and I never followed up. I just sent them an email which is what they say on their voice mail you can do in a dental emergency. We'll see what happens.
This stinks. Of course my husband is out of town and I don't have a handy babysitter either.

You say your dental carrier gave you the run-around when you asked how much would it cost for an out-of-network provider (dentist) does the work. Just how would they know that. An out-of-network dentist can charge you HIS rate, and that rate WILL vary by what has to be done. If it is just a cleaning, look at your insurance plan booklet for starters. A simple cleaning is something that the out-of-network dentist office can tell you------but do not expect the Insurance Company to know that.
The insurance company told me they cover "usual and customary" for the area. But they were not able to tell me how much was usual and customary. Of course the dental office knew how much they charged. What i needed to know is how much of that would the insurance company cover. Then i would do the math (insurance company cover $100, dentist charges $120, it costs me $20). I dont think it is unreasonable for the insurance company to be able to tell me that.
If it's an abscess you need antibiotics. And what you're describing sounds like an abscess. You might be able to go to a doc-in-the-box and get them to prescribe some penicillin for you. That's what the dentist will do before they do any work besides x-rays. They won't work on your mouth with an infection going on. The penicillin will shrink the abscess and that will reduce the pressure which is causing the pain. BTDT including waking up in the middle of the night. They'll probably also give you some vicodin or similar for the pain until the abx kick in. Sounds like you may have a root canal in your future.
Have you tried calling your regular dentist? They may have an emergency number/pager number where they can be reached or they may have a message referring you somewhere. My kids' dentist has pager numbers for weekend and after-hours. I've never called my own dentist to find out.
I've had excruciating tooth pain during the weekends when my usual dentist was closed, and I have to tell you that actually getting treated in a dentist office outside of the M-F, 8-5 time frame on an emergency basis is extremely difficult, pretty much impossible in my experience (in the triangle area).
You can give it a try based on some of the advice above, but the best advice I can give is to find an urgent care to prescribe pain killers and antibiotics (or find something OTC) to get you to Monday. I know it's easier said than done.
Well, i have developed some sensitivity to antibiotics (although i dont take them often) so im not going to get a prescription unless im positive its an infection. I know i had a crack in my tooth last time i had xrays done a year ago. They said they were just going to keep an eye on it (that was in texas). Im thinking this might just be the crack splitting more. I wish that dentist had offered me a guard to help with teeth grinding. I didnt know about them until i just started googling about this issue this morning. I might have been able to avoid more deterioration. He just told me to stop grinding me teeth. Like i have some control over that when i sleep. :-/
You might try rinsing with warm salt water which will help reduce any swelling of the gums and pain. I've never heard of anyone "watching" a cracked tooth since usually that means getting a root canal and crown assuming the tooth can still be saved. Your costs will be much higher if you go out of network for treatment which doesn't make sense to me if you have dental insurance and most dentists do have an after hours emergency number you can call for help.
I'd go to the ER or a urgent care for antibiotics (excruciating tooth pain is an infection) unless you are a patient of record... Dentist are not going to see you on an emergency basis. Call a dentist tomorrow.
