The American Way Thrift Store will do pick-ups:
American Thrift Way Stores : : americanwaythriftstores.com :: Raleigh & Garner (http://www.americanwaythriftstores.com/raleigh.html - broken link)

You can also carry to the street, or put in your driveway & post that it's there on craigslist: san francisco bay area classifieds for jobs, apartments, personals, for sale, services, community, and events and then delete when picked up. There's usually people with wants ads posted on CL too that would gladly come pick it up. You might be able to make some $ by selling it on CL or http://www.caryyardsales.com too, if you've got time and want to mess with it.

You can post it on freecycle if you just want to give it away for free.

If you are near a military base they may come and take it for you. The Air Force has something called the Airman's Attic. They take furniture and household items for the Airmen moving off base who have no furniture and don't make a lot of money. They took care of emptying out my son's apt for me. I bet that other branches of the service have something similar, and these guys and girls could use the help!
