I used to live in Chapel Hill back in the '80s, and used to like Allen & Sons for their bbq and their vegetable plate. Mama Dip's is fantastic, too ... at least it was back then, before they got "discovered" by the foodies. Both are definitely worth "talking about". I know there are similar places in Raleigh, but don't know much about them. I heard good things about The Pit when I lived there, but other people didn't care for it.
Gypsy's is still around. But as the OP later clarified, they're looking for a family-style dinner place, not a diner.
