I used to live in Chapel Hill back in the '80s, and used to like Allen & Sons for their bbq and their vegetable plate. Mama Dip's is fantastic, too ... at least it was back then, before they got "discovered" by the foodies. Both are definitely worth "talking about". I know there are similar places in Raleigh, but don't know much about them. I heard good things about The Pit when I lived there, but other people didn't care for it.

The Farmer's Market Restaurant in Raleigh has good meat and veggie plates but I am not sure if they are open for dinner. They might be lunch only.

I haven't been there in years, but I think Gypsy's is still around

Gypsy's is still around. But as the OP later clarified, they're looking for a family-style dinner place, not a diner.
