(Not the expected) Cemeteries (thread)
I am looking for unusual cemeteries in the area.
Not the big, grandiose cemeteries w/ beautiful mausoleums and such.
Rather, small, oddly placed, or just weird ones.
For example, there is a cemetery in Greenville that had a shopping plaza built around it, it's in the middle of a parking lot.
My bro-in-law is collecting pictures of unusual cemeteries, and I find them interesting as well.
TIA for any pointers.

Have you seen Oakwood cemetary? It's big but very old and beautiful. There are some really gorgeous old headstones there. It's almost like a park. Definitley not weird or anything, but worth a visit.

There are a lot of small family cemeteries in North Raleigh. There used to be one at the corner of Mt. Vernon Church Road and Nipper Road. I haven't been up there in a while so not sure if it is still there. Genealogy resources are a good source of cemetery information, as several genealogy sites have transcribed the names for researchers. Try this one: Cemeteries of Wake County, North Carolina - Cemetery Records - Genealogy

There is a small one right at the corner of Stephenson Rd and Sunset Lake Rd in what I think is probably Holly Springs. There is another off 10-10 Rd where the old Penny Rd intersection was before they rerouted Penny Rd. There is another small one in the middle of a field off Holly Springs Rd between Cary Pkwy and Tryon (closer to Holly Springs Rd). These are the ones I've noticed because they are very small.

I agree about Oakwood. There are also three other ones that have some interesting history. Home

We found one by a roadside historical marker off US 1 North (we always read the historical signs!):
"Kittrell Confederate Cemetery, Trails sign in Kittrell, just off Route 1 - Fifty-four Confederate soldiers, who died at a nearby wartime hospital, are buried here. Kittrell's location at a railroad junction made it a good spot for the 300-bed facility, created in mid-1864."
We found it quite spooky behind some older homes and right next to railroad tracks.
Also, a small cemetery is located on Falls of Neuse (headed north, just before the Falls Lake dam) next to the Falls fire department. It is also right at the entrance of a new, large home development. It has a sturdy iron fence around it and a beautiful old oak.

Cool, many thanks for the tips so far!
I also remembered there is an odd little cemetery in Umstead State Park, along a walking trail in the section accessible from Harrison Ave.

There are two out of the way ones that I know about.
First off, behind the YWCA on Oberlin Rd there is a very small cemetery. 1012 Oberlin Rd, Raleigh, NC - look on google maps and it's under the trees behind the back parking lot (E of the building itself). It's very small, but you might find something interesting there. Plus, it's close to Cameron Village so you can get something to eat afterwards...
The other one I know of is on Airport Blvd, south of 40. It's across the street from Hooters, which should qualify for "strange location", if nothing else

I just recently saw one on Pinecrest about a mile off of Glenwood right across the street from Long Lake Subdivision. Its quite small with maybe 5 tombstones and I could tell they were really old. Coming from Glenwood its on the right and there is a old wire fence around it. It would definitely make for a interesting picture.
