Have you looked at Appalachian State? It might be appealing. It's a beautiful area of NC and easier to get into than UNC, but also has a very active college life — big football fans there. Boone is a great college town. I think they do have a major in environmental science as well.
poppydog: Yes, we have looked at App State. She thinks it is too cold but yes, very pretty. Other than that, I agree it would be a good fit. She attended a high jump camp a few years back at App State and really liked it at the time. After looking at so many other colleges she is like a kid in a candy shop and is able to hone in on what she really likes and doesn't like. Can't wait to see where she ends up.
FTR, if you have in-state status she'll have a better shot at UNC. High SATs and ACTs would probably help, too. Also, I do think they try to make sure that their acceptances aren't heavily weighted toward one area of the state. I have heard that it is hard for kids from Chapel Hill Carrboro City Schools to get into UNC, for example. A kid from someplace like Sampson county with the same scores and grades as a CHCCS student would have a better shot than the CHCCS student because there are so many of them that qualify and want to attend. Don't know how true that is, but I think there is some basis for it. Good luck to her!

This is definitely the case. They'll cap the number of students from one school. CHHS is very top heavy and the number of kids with 3.9s coud easily exceed the limit at unc.
I don't think it would be much fun to go to college in the same area that you grow up in. Those kids probably see some of the flaws of UNC too.
