Virgil's Jamaica served from a steam line. Pleasant man but food was nothing special. Jerk seasoning was so so.

Bought meat pies from Taste of Jamaica that tasted and looked exactly like the pies I buy frozen at Costco.

Tried looking up Jamaican places on Jamaican Restaurants in Raleigh and Cary, North Carolina without much luck.

Anyone know of a great Jamaican restaurant in the area with spicy, layered jerk seasoning and curry so good you wanted to lick the plate?

Have you tried jamaica Jamaica in Durham (55/54 intersection)? It's the only Jamaican that I've had so I can't compare it to anything but the Jerk and Curry chicken are very good.

Will give it a try.

Get so tired of driving to Durham for dinner. Wished we had settled down there.

I live in Raleigh, and when I'm in the mood for Jamaican food, my dollars tend to be split-up more or less evenly between Virgil's, Lee's Kitchen on Capital, Jamaican Grille on Atlantic Springs, and Jerk Masters on Poole, depending on which I happen to be closest to. (I see that two of those are not listed on the website you linked to.) To me, all four of those places consistently serve me hearty, satisfying, tasty meals at decent prices from nice people in fun environments. But I don't know about literally feeling an urge to lick curry off the plate, or the "layered"-ness of the jerk sauce, or that sort of thing. I don't claim to be any kind of a connoisseur, nor much of a foodie or a gourmand. So I don't know. But they all do a good job, for me, of providing basic, simple, good food, and I like them. Of them, I'd say that Jamaican Grille is probably my favorite, but I don't perceive a huge difference. I do really like Virgil's, although their hours are kind of frustratingly weird. And the hours have gotten more complicated recently since they've been focusing so much on the food truck (or trailer, actually) side of the business, which is understandable since they tell me it commonly generates a lot more margin dollars than the brick-and-mortar place, but still occasionally annoying. I agree that I wish Virgil's jerk was a bit spicier, but it's still damn good, in my opinion, and they're such awesome people there.

By the way, I'm sorry to hear you griping about the trek to Durham for dining. I also wish that the Triangle wasn't quite so spread-out, and if I could choose to live anywhere around here I'd probably pick Durham, too. But I enjoy Raleigh and Wake County a lot as well, and never begrudge the voyage to Durham or Chapel Hill/Carrboro for any purpose. If only we had better public transit between the different parts of the Triangle. Maybe someday. But I do really enjoy riding the Bridge Bus back and forth between Downtown Raleigh and Downtown Durham on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. Do you ever do that? I highly recommend it, although its practical usefulness depends a lot on specifically where in Raleigh and where in Durham you're traveling between, and when and why. But it is fun.

Thanks for the suggestions.

By layered flavor, I mean you taste not only the bonnet peppers, but the cilantro, and onion, and .... I've made jerk seasoning and has a lot of ingredients that blend together, but it's a richer mixture than just pouring hot sauce on top.

Don't always trek to Durham. We eat at Bosporus, Taqueria Rancho Grande, Lucky 32 and Thai Sushi in Cary. Enjoy Mr. Ed's in Raleigh. All serve wonderful food.

But also love to eat at Saldelia, Guglhupf, Parker and Otis... in Durham.

Ditto...I loved that place. Red beans and rice...jerk chicken...and ginger beer! It goes so well with that food...

There used to be a really good Jamaican place off Capital Blvd but I had heard that it either closed or changed hands. I think it was on Atlantic Springs?

Reporting back.

Had lunch at Jamaica Jamaica last week. Ordered a combination platter. Thought I was getting jerk pork, jerk chicken, and a shrimp something or other.

There was a language barrier with our server, neither one of us was bilingual, and I ended up with the shrimp, jerk chicken, and curry chicken.

t was tasty, but not that knock-your-socks-off Jamaican jerk taste.

The search continues.
