I've heard from some Indian acquaintances that Royal Indian is very good - not specifically the buffet. Never been myself.

We also had the pleasure of going to an Indian neighbors housewarming party that was catered by Zakya and it was EXCELLENT. Very spicy by non-Indian standards (which suits us fine), and the vegies dishes were good even to my carnivore husband.

BOTH are on our radar for future visits. (Tower and Udipi are not because they are 100% vegetarian).

Udupi in Cary - $13 for lunch buffet on weekends.

Awhile back, several of met there for the buffet. It was okay. Nothing special. None of us went back for seconds on anything.

I have been told that the management has changed since then. Things may have improved.

Spice and Curry in RTP, mostly for the varied selection and they seem to have more robust flavors than the other RTP places.

Closer to Morrisville, I like Paradise on 54, specifically they seem to have the best Biryanni, and a generally good buffet overall

Saffron was nice, but a little rich for me.

For Vegetarian, my Indian CoWorker takes me to a place on 54 near 540 (Morrisville/RTP), I forgot the name, but it has "Krishna" in it, I think. [EDIT: http://saikrishnabhavan.com/ It's in the little strip with a Duke Medicine place there, you wouldn't even know it's there. It was VERY good, and I (major carnivore) didn't even miss the meat. (Same coworker used to recommend Tower, but they've undergone changes in Management, and no longer get the same great reviews).

Default 5 Hot Chillies-Morrisville, NC

I've had most of the Indian buffets and wanted to give a recommendation for a restaurant in the Grace Park plaze. It opened a few months back. They do not have buffets but we felt that was in their favor as the food is fresh and tastes are customized. They have platters. As well you can order from a limited lunch menu. I've been 6-7 times and loved it!!!

This is 5 Hot Chilies. I really like this place, as do my Indian husband and inlaws. They have a lot of chaat (Indian snack-type food) on their lunch menu as well as the more typical Indian restaurant offerings. Yummy!

I have found, worldwide that buffets in general, and Indian buffets specifically, never are the best the restaurant has to offer. Some are ok, but I have consistently been more impressed by ordering off the menu. If you don't have time, call ahead. Good luck..if any of you get down to New Bern, try The Bay Leaf..been open about a year. Truly world class, people are astonished that we have such a Jewel.

My vote goes for Chef of India on E. Chatham. Their buffet is one of the best around.
I also like Udupi for something different, but I feel they are a little expensive.

This USED toy be our favorite too (by far!) but in the past year or so it seemed liek it had really gone downhill. Have you been recently? I'm willing to give it another shot, we used to go there every weekend.

I've actually only done takeout within the past year so I've had almost no interaction with the service, but the food seemed just fine. I think the last time I did takeout was about 3 months ago?

There is an Indian buffet on Aviation Parkway right by the Jersey Mikes that is decent and affordable (I believe 9 bucks). My favorite is Tandoor in Chapel Hill on Franklin street.
