Speed limits on the following stretches will increase from 65 to 70 by the end of the month:

Interstate 540 between Glenwood Avenue and I-40.

All of N.C. 540, including the Triangle Expressway.

N.C. 147 between N.C. 540 and I-40.

Cool! That means traffic that currently does 70-75mph will slow down to 65mph in the fast lane, just like it did on the existing stretch of 540 that recently went up to 70mph

Its been a long time since I took Drivers Ed, but I don't remember them talking about Lane Discipline at all (I guess they were too busy showing us films of people who ran off a two lane road in the middle of the night and spilled their brains on the road!) That would go a long way I think.

It's funny you mention that because I used to notice the exact same thing. People went 75-80 when the limit was 65 and then they went 65-70 when it went up to 70...weird! NC-540 could have an 80mph limit and it wouldn't be high enough. That road is like a wide open SAFE drag strip! I see troopers hanging out there all the time, since cars are like sitting ducks on that road.

Why don't they just remove all speed limits, and give the collision shops and funeral homes more business ! Crazy !!! Just my opinion.

It wouldn't be a problem if people would use some common sense while driving, but that seems to be severely lacking in this area on many levels. Automobiles can safely handle the increased speeds, so that's not an issue regarding safety. It's the person behind the wheel that creates problems and people who are too scared to drive at the higher posted speed limit shouldn't be out driving on those roads to begin with.

ITS ABOUT TIME!!!!

I could not stand 65mph on 540. Especially Triangle Expressway. They should bring it up to 80 and I bet more people would pay the toll. It's a ghost town even at 5:00pm.

Agreed. That road could easily be that high. People would be doing that normally but half the usage of the road are police so they can make up revenue shortfalls with speeding tickets.

saw the headline and was really hoping they were doing something about 440. 60 is ridiculous for that stretch of road!
