So my question is are leases generally year to year there? I thought I saw somewhere there were 6 month leases.

For apartment renting that is.

Where are you looking? I can only speak for Cary, Raleigh and Morrisville because that is where I looked, I found leases as short as 3 months.

I am looking in the Raleigh area (I guess it is called the Triangle). Sorry, getting used to the terminology!

You can get a 6 month lease in an apartment complex but they tend to want both employment that will cover the rent AND good credit, of course.

Yes, you can find shorter term leases on apartments.
When we were looking, the shortest term we could find in this area (that accepted pets) was 6 months unfurnished.
We could get shorter term but they were furnished and more expensive.
And if you are really short term, you could consider an extended stay hotel.

This was about 1.5 years ago. We had pets so I wasn't searching for no-pet or outside of Raleigh/Cary - perhaps outside of those requirements you may find unfurnished for less than 6 mos?

In Raleigh and Cary, the minimum lease on a house is one year.

We took a 9 month lease in Cary in 8/12. We could have had as short as 6 months and it was an apartment complex. You will usually pay more monthly for the shorter lease, so choose wisely. Best of luck to you.

I know people that have had a 3 month lease in Cary. But again, you say Raleigh and Triangle interchangeably so I'm not sure exactly where you want to live. Say "Raleigh", and people will think you mean the city of Raleigh. Say "Triangle" and people will think you mean anything from Chapel Hill to Durham to Wake Forest to Clayton and all in between.

We could have rented an unfurnished apartment that allowed our dog in Brier Creek for anything over 3 months. We ended up with 8 months. Every month that we added on beyond 3 months decreased the monthly rent.

Thanks for clearing of the geographic terminology. Once I come and visit, I will know where I want to settle. I would do at least 6 months, no less. Just wondering if under a year was an option.
