Turning on the A/C in October. Walking the neighborhood today I'd estimate at least 90% of the houses sound like the A/C is back on. Do you crack and turn it back because the date not matter?

Well, our system is always on - it's either AC or heat....it's just a matter of do I let it click on. We have programmed thermostats and today it did kick on about 1 p.m. I had a couple windows open, DH was working outside so I shut the windows and let it run to cool off the house for when he came in. It hasn't run in days though.
At night when it gets cool sometimes you can use fans to draw in cool air and cool the house off. My wife refuses to go to sleep with windows open (2nd floor) so I have to do that between about 7-9pm. If it cools the house off enough then we keep the a/c off otherwise on comes the a/c. Yes, inefficient and illogical but what can you do.
It was in the 80's today unless you have shade over your house it's going to get warm inside. When she is gone at work I will turn it off even in the summer and turn it on right before she gets home. The constant cycling of the unit on/off is what will prematurely wear it.
I think the question is a a little ridiculous. Visit the southern hemisphere and be prepared to have your mind blown! They run AC in December Man! What would the date have to do with it? I use to live in Minneapolis and had a few real warm October days, and that ac was turned on then! At least during the day. Why did you buy AC? You bought AC so as not to suffer in the heat. Just because it isn't 99 with eighty percent humidity doesn't mean you shouldn't turn it on. The high was 86 today. That is plenty warm for AC. Tonight, it will cool off and the windows will be thrown open, but when its 86 at high noon, AC is on.

People survived until the 20th century without AC so I find it hard to believe you can't handle 86. You should try visiting the Southern Hemisphere of Africa where plenty of people don't have AC - your mind will be blown!
If I'm hot, the a/c is on, regardless of the time of year. My husband would keep it WAY cooler if I let him. And he'd never turn the heat on in the winter, either!

Yeah but most of those old homes that had no A/C in central NC have massive amounts of rotten wood throughout them if they haven't been renovated.
You talking 86 degrees or 86% relative humidity? heh... doesn't matter what I can handle if the wood can't.
YES to AC whatever time of year it is. If Im hot it's on, if it gets too cold I just put the temp up so it doesn't come on.
I agree. I love having the windows open on cool days but I refuse to have them open at night because bugs want to come in and I am incredibly phobic of spiders.
My A/C has been coming on pretty much every day since April, which sucks. This high 80s/low 90s needs to make way for Fall. I keep it at 76 and then when it's cold, the heat is set on 68.
