I plan to buy my own land. Price range is $300K (house only). Who are the best semi-custom builders in the area in this range?

Also, should we seriously consider a general contractor and find stock house plan? Any other thoughts? Thanks!

And you already own the land or plan to buy? $300k is just for the house?

I'd like to piggy-back on this question, but I am looking in Hillsborough. Same price range.

I would check out Drees homes. They build a nice home and I believe you could do it in your price range.

I would go to Parade of Homes done by custom builders in your price range - they have one more weekend.

If you are out of town, then you can search the website to develop a short list of builders to interview.

We just looked at 5-6 homes over in Regency - none in this price range so the builders don't matter -- but wow, what a difference in floor plan, usefulness of space, etc. So it was an interesting comparison of what builders can do with the same amount of 'money' in a similar neighborhood. The homes had vastly different appeal.

But if you have the opportunity to visit some non-tract builder parade homes, I'd definitely take advantage of this time of year to be able to walk in and talk to the builders -- that is what this 'parade' is all about! and/or set up appointments to see their homes while they are in 'show mode'.

I would consider Drees semi-custom, since they will build on your lot and will modify stock plans. To me, that is the definition of semi-custom. vs. a KB or Pulte home, for instance.
