We will be relocating to NC in the spring and we are debating on where to live. We like HS, but it seems very far from RTP. Can anyone please tell me how long it actually takes to get to RTP? Also, what roads would you take to get there?
I have driven it a few times testing the time....some days it's 35 min from the Fuquay/HSP border.....some days it take 45. I usually shoot straight up 55 though. It is really going to depend on how deep into and which area of HSP you are coming from.
Obviously depending on what time of day or night the time will vary.
On a Sunday afternoon, I can get from the Park to the exit off of Highway 55 to Holly Springs in 30 minutes or slow. I don't care what time of day or night, getting through Apex is a major pain only to probablt get worse before it gets better. You could take 55 straight in or jump on 540 depending on where you are going, not much difference in time.
Rush hour starts around 7 in AM and runs until 6 in evening.
Good Luck and welcome to NC.
If you are doing this during the morning commute, I'd count on 45 minutes most days with an hour to 1:15 possible a couple times a month. You can do it in 35 minutes on off hours if you are lucky.
I tried this route a few times when we were house shopping. I work at Sony Ericsson, which is at the southern end of RTP on Davis Drive.
I would leave my office at 4:30pm and see how far south I could get in 30 minutes. My route was:
South on Davis into Apex
Ten Ten east to Kildaire Farm
South on Kildaire to Holly Springs Rd.
That was about it. Sometimes I could make it a little farther to the intersection of Sunset Lake and Holly Springs. And believe me when I say that I am a "spirited" driver
I avoided 55 through Apex because that gets REALLY backed up starting a little south of the highway 64 intersection all the way to the 55 bypass.
holly springs rd across 55 bypass turn right on apex-holly springs rd. follow to left on salem and cut over to olive chapel on apex bar-b-q. turn left on olive chapel and follow to 751 where you will go right. take to 751 and follow to 40. takes 25 minutes to get to 751/40 at any time of the day. a few more miles but hardly a car in site the whole trip. from there it depends on where you have to go in rtp. ps, it is a beautiful country drive, but dont tell anyone my secret route!
Awhile back I clocked some driving times to specific places from our home in Holly Springs. I don't remember if RTP was on there or not. At any rate if you are considering a move to Holly Springs it might be of interest to you
There is a thread right now on another board I frequent about HS->RTP. The OP of that one has an 8-5 job and was asking about commute. Here is one the responses:
I live off Avent Ferry Rd. in Holly Springs and commute to RTP.
I've tried every alternative out there, don't believe anyone saying there's an easy way. If you're trying to work 8-5, expect 45 - 1:15. It'll never get better. Hwy. 55 out by Target isn't the problem, it's getting from HS to Target that takes an enternity.
I leave at 5:45am and it takes a solid 35-40 minutes with zero traffic on the road. I leave at 3:00pm and it takes ~45 minutes to get home.
