Hello,

Reading tons of information as usual on Wake County Schools. I am not sure I am reading correctly or understanding. Does where you live NOT matter in which school you are assigned to and basically you have to "request" a school? Is this only if you transfer in the middle of the school year? Does it change every year?

I would hate to think that if we are looking at a neighborhood in Cary or Apex for example, that the school its zoned for could be totally different.

Is there a place, aside from trying to decipher all these forums that explains how this all works? I am so confused and getting more confused the more reading I do.

Thanks in advance

When we moved here in summer of 2012, it was pretty much a choice option-even outside of neighborhoods. We missed the enrollement period so they had no idea where our kids would end up since we moved here in July, which is why we didn't move into Wake. That only lasted last year and now I believe they went back to more of a neighborhood school plan, but I am not sure there are guarantees, especially in areas with full schools. Others on here will have more info

No it is now based on where you live.

Go to wcpss.net
On the top right, click on student assignment
You can enter any address to find out the school assignment for this year. They haven't come out with next year's yet.

People seem to be under the impression that they can move here and request any old school they want via transfer, but that's not so easy depending on the school you want. It is certainly not guaranteed. You will have to provide your own transportation. You will not get a transfer to a capped school.

Some schools enrollments are capped. That means if you move here and you are in a neighborhood assigned to that school, you aren't getting in, even though it's your "base" school. You'll be sent to an overflow school.

All this info is on the assignment tab noted above.

find and contact a qualified Realtor, go sit down with them, and talk about various neighborhoods/schools. I know of at least 3 such Realtors that frequent this forum, and I'm sure there are more.

In the meantime, go to ncreportcards.org, and look up the information on relevant schools. IE, as you search online in the price range you've been prequalified for, you can look up various schools. You'll likely narrow down the locations to no more than 10 schools.

Also, so it's not lost - WCPSS in general has very good schools.

Yes, it is based on where you live. If you do not like your zoned school you have some magnet options but all the elementaries , I would say, in Cary and APex are fine fromw hat I understnd. Same seems to be true for middles and high schools.
